Longhorn Pre-College Academy

Longhorn Pre-College Academy (LPCA)

The Longhorn Pre-College Academy (LPCA) provides interested and motivated students from economically disadvantaged and historically underserved populations with a pathway to The University of Texas at Austin (UT). The LPCA identifies students who might not otherwise consider UT as an option, and provide them with experiences that build a stronger connection to the university. The academy will help students understand the importance of postsecondary education, and help them navigate the college preparation and admissions process for The University of Texas at Austin and identify potential financial assistance for college.

LPCA is being delivered in partnership with Education is Freedom (EIF) Dallas, a comprehensive college-readiness school-based program serving Dallas ISD. Participating students will have access to academic enrichment services, college prep workshops, mentoring, advisory services by UT Outreach staff, and a residential camp. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in on-campus college preview days and other cultural enrichment activities.

Once students are selected for LPCA, they must maintain honor roll status throughout their participation in the program and meet the annual program requirements. Students are required to complete a minimum of six workshops a year, provided by the UT Outreach–Dallas or provided jointly by UT Outreach and Education is Freedom. At the conclusion of their junior year, students eligible to matriculate to UT may participate in a competitive process for scholarships associated with the program.

The University of Texas at Austin has committed $3 million in scholarships over three years to support the pilot program. Approximately 46 scholarships will be awarded annually over the three-year pilot program. Awarded scholarships will be renewable over four years.

Scholarships will be awarded at the following levels:

  • LPCA “Burnt Orange” Scholar Awards include full tuition and on-campus room and board scholarships. The Burnt Orange Scholar Awards are limited to one student per cohort year from the entire EIF/LPCA pool
  • LPCA Scholars Awards are full tuition scholarships and are limited to one recipient per EIF/LPCA high school campus, per cohort year
  • LPCA Achievement Awards provide $4,000 per year for four-years and limited to no more than 38 recipients per cohort year, or up to such a number that available funding, will allow, whichever is less.
