UT Outreach Houston is proud to Partner with Parents
Our Parent Engagement Program designed to educate and inform parents about how to prepare their children for college. This will include the same topics that are currently being used UT Outreach Houston students, but geared for an adult audience. For example, the curriculum includes a “Paying for College” component that talks about filling out the FAFSA. The parental part of the program would address the importance of completing the annual income tax filing in a timely manner to make sure their children meet important deadlines.
The program goes a step further in providing information that will empower parents’ in their roles as advocates for their children. This will include knowing what courses are required and how to determine which college entrance exams their children should be preparing to take.
As a complement to the evening and weekend workshops for students, the program offers workshops for parents that are aligned with what students are learning. The curriculum follows the same timeline as students to encourage dialogue between parents and students at each step of the process.
In addition to sessions offered by UT Outreach Houston, there we also provide opportunities for parents to participate in activities offered by community partners such as job fairs, job training, and civic engagement. This program offers community service and social opportunities for parents to network with one another.
